Mama Mia!

Still (photgraphed) from the DVD "Mamma Mia". Watched this movie NOT for ABBA nor for the acting performances from Meryl Streep (OK but sometimes over) or Pierce Brosnan (OK but sometimes under) but because the outdoor shoots were almost entirely set in Greece (Agios Ioannis Chapel, Skopelos, Damouchari, Pelion, Kastani Beach, Skopelos). Good Greek photography (Haris Zambarloukos), The best acting came from the extras, excellent propping and set decoration, and of course the divine light of Greece. And I even enjoyed (some of) the dancing. Memorable performances by Christine Baranski, Julie Walters (seen better), La Streep (at times) and Amanda Seyfried. Anyways I brought the Greek locations together as sort of an idea for a trip down there...(if not on the beaten track already)

The Trout that was wrong (during the war)

There''s a show on national TV here in B called "Plat Preféré" where the chef/host brings back to life favorite dishes of famous men. People like Roald Dahl, Salvador Dali, Jacques Brel, Johnny Cash & Freddy Mercury, and the infamous Adolphe Hitler...The dish that Hitler - a vegetarian!- "allegedly" liked best was trout with butter sauce.The show was canceled and brought lively discussions (again). Instead he made a "Risotto ai funghi e tartufo" for . Maria Callas.
I kinda felt sorry for the (much underestimated) trout and made my own version of it yesterday for dinner. ("in papillon" with mixed vegetables -match-stick-wise- , wine & butter inside and bacon around it) more info ? need a recipe? the website of Plat Préféré ?, the website of the chef/host ?

Yiannis Ritsos (The Other Side)

One of my favorite Greeks. I've met him once in Athens (happy day!) a few weeks before his death (sad day) .Somewhat he still rides in the shadow of Kostis Palamas, Giorgos Seferis, and Odysseus Elytis, but it's in his poems that I've discovered the real, ambiguous spirit of Greece. His presence is to be found on the islands, around Athens and certainly on the mysterious, dark & lonely (off season) small peninsula of Monemvassia. A real, complete website should be devoted to him! (I never found one) Picture comes from his "Selected Poems" © Efstathiadis Group and one of the five books I will take into my grave, so to speak...;)

Few people know that he also painted and when in exile he started painting on simple stones or pebbles. I think I've seen a book on this collection on "Painted Stones" (Great Idea!) but all I could find on the web so far was this picture on Flickr:

Thanks to Isabella (logty ) I know now that this exhibition was organized in the Benaki Museum
in Athens in 2005. Wow, I wish I had seen it! Luckily she's send me two more revealing pictures:
